Their main purposes, the ones for which they were created, is to protect your eyes while you are in the sun. There are many types available, some of which can actually be worn over regular prescription glasses, if needed. Still, no matter the reason for wearing them, they also serve a fashion purpose, as well. In more recent years, sunglasses have become even more popular because of the fashion sense they evoke. People who would not necessarily use them for the original intended purpose are now buying them as an accessory to their trendy wardrobe. In fact, it is not uncommon for people to own several pairs of sunglasses to be worn with different outfits on different occasions.
